Journey to Spitsbergen(new for 2020, Moderate Grade 4)
Experience eight days when the sun doesn’t set, crossing the Arctic Circle and continuing far beyond to a land of glaciers, sea cliffs and fjords where nature exists at its rawest in the remote Svaland archipelago islands. Taking in the Norwegian coast with some excellent wilderness walking around the coastal towns of Honningsvåg, Kristiansund and little visited port of Harsted, sail out to Spitsbergen Island, just 800 miles from the North Pole. Wild and remote, enjoy hikes from the Russian ghost town of Pyramiden and across the arctic tundra from Longyearbyen to see short-lived summer flowers, grazing reindeer, curious arctic foxes and possibly polar bear. Returning to the mainland, wander around the island city of Tromsø, taking the cable car up Mount Storsteinen and climbing Holandsmelen for more spectacular 360°sea and mountain views. From the final anchorage in Bodø, spend the day on a new hike in the Hidden Valley, a pristine enclave of mountains, glacier-carved rock and crystal-clear running water.
